A variety of evaluation types are available in CommuniCoach. Healthcare educators will typically use checklists to evaluate students in standardized patient exercises. CommuniCoach provides a checklist evaluation type to make this easy. The instructor can check items on the checklist as they view the video, comment on checklist items, and even point to specific segments of the video they would like to highlight.
In particular, the software can be used to evaluate the communication skills of medical students.
CommuniCoach allows a medical school to use any evaluation criteria they wish to develop. However, some organizations do not have a standardized method for evaluating physician-patient communication or prefer to use an industry-standard model. To assist in start-up, the healthcare version of CommuniCoach is packaged with a number of evaluation tools. These include the SEGUE Framework developed by Northwestern University’s Program in Communication and Medicine, and the E4 Model developed by the Institute for Healthcare Communication.
Finally, CommuniCoach is not limited to providing evaluations of physician-patient communication. It can be used to evaluate any student activity that has been video-recorded – including diagnostic or surgical procedures.
In sum, the benefits of CommuniCoach in healthcare education are:
- Innovative use of video and computer technology to provide move effective instruction and evaluation of communication skills.
- Documentation that students have received instruction and evaluation in communication skills before engaging in patient care activities (as required by accreditation organizations).
- Database of digitized videos and text evaluations that can be used for research or assessment of communication skills instruction.
- Different frameworks for evaluating communication skills based on popular instruction and assessment tools.
CommuniCoach can be great tool for healthcare education professionals.
