CommuniCoach in Performing Arts Programs

CommuniCoach allows a Performing Arts department to evaluate any type of video-recorded activity.   These activities might include rehearsals, performances, recitals, admission tryouts, jury reviews, student-produced films, or student teaching.   The instructor has a tool for quickly and effectively providing feedback on these activities and the student can see the feedback directly linked to their actions on the video.   With the Web version of CommuniCoach, these evaluations can occur anywhere in the world and at a time convenient for the reviewer.

All three types of CommuniCoach evaluations can be used in a Performing Arts program.   The picture above shows the Segment Evaluation being used to breakdown the performance into segments and provide comments about each particular segment.   This technique can be used to provide very detailed feedback on specific points in the video and direct the student to the exact point where the comment applies.

The checklist evaluation can be used to apply a standard set of review criteria to student exercises.   The instructor also has the option to provide specific comments on each checklist item and even link their comments to segments of the video.

The text evaluation can be used to provide free-form feedback to the student.   It can also be used to track the performance against a text script.   The script is simply pasted into the text box and then comments can be inserted by the instructor or student directly into the point in the script where the comment applies.    These comments can then be automatically counted by CommuniCoach and used as the source for a grade.

Another great advantage is the ease of controlling the video.   With simple buttons the instructor can move back and forth within the video in large increments or even one second at a time.   In addition, the video can be sped-up with no loss in quality or change in pitch of the sound.   These features are a great improvement over viewing student exercises on regular videotape – plus, there is no need to worry about labeling, storing or transporting videotapes.

CommuniCoach can also be used for self-evaluation and later review by the instructor or even for testing.   A shared video can be used as the source for each student to review.   The students’ reviews can then be graded by the instructor. 

In sum, CommuniCoach can be used in a performing arts program to provide excellent feedback to students, save time for the instructors, act as a means for testing, and allow student activities to be reviewed from a location and time convenient for the reviewer.
