CommuniCoach in Sign Language and Interpreter Training Programs
Both the segment-based and checklist evaluations can be used in sign language and interpreter training programs. However, the text-based evaluation is particularly useful for these programs.
The text-based evaluation allows an instructor to view a video of a student exercise along with a text script of the exercise. The instructor can then “mark” within the script and note particular errors. Using CommuniCoach in sign language and interpreter training programs, instructors can provide more detailed feedback on sign productions, fingerspelling, and use of ASL grammatical structure. When the evaluation is complete, CommuniCoach can scan the script and count the number of errors automatically.
Another great advantage is the ease of controlling the video. With simple buttons the instructor can move back and forth within the video in large increments or even one second at a time. In addition, the video can be slowed down with no loss in quality or change in pitch of the sound. These features are a great improvement over viewing sign language exercises on regular videotape – plus, there is no need to worry about labeling, storing or transporting videotapes.
